I have read the article, which is taken from a British
national daily newspaper “The Independent”. The title of the article is “Why do we get fat? The reason we put on
weight”. The subtitle is “Your body has clever systems to know how much
to eat - but it can't compete with consistent over-eating”. The author of
the article is Laura Mears. This article is devoted to the problem of health and
eating habits.
The author starts by telling the reader about the
obesity epidemic growth and stresses out the importance of understanding the
causes of gaining weight. The statistics says that since 1980, worldwide
obesity has more than doubled. The author of the article writes that there
should be a balance between the amount of calories we get and the amount of
calories we need. Laura Mears points out that if we consume more than is
needed to run our body, the body stores these extra calories as fat. These fat
stores can function as a reserve if we don’t eat enough, but if someone
consistently over-eats, they will become overweight or obese as the body
continues to store the excess calories. The author continues by saying that in
order to know how much food to eat, the human body needs a way of assessing how
much energy it has in storage. Leptin, also known as the ‘fat hormone’,
essentially acts as a fuel gauge. The article goes on to say that it is made by
fat cells and tells the brain how much fat the body contains, and whether the
supplies are increasing, or being used up. A small region of the brain called
the hypothalamus can either stimulate or suppress the appetite depending on leptin
levels. Laura Mears emphasizes that it was originally thought that leptin
could be used as a treatment for obesity. However, although it is an important
regulator of food intake, appetite is affected by a variety of things, from how
full the stomach is to an individual’s emotional state or food preferences. For
this reason, it is easy to override the leptin message and gain weight even when
fat stores are sufficient.
The problem of healthy eating and keeping fit worries many
people nowadays. I think this article would be interesting practically for
everyone. Though there are some scientific facts in the article, it is not
boring. The information is presented in a simple and exciting way.
In the article it is said that since 1980, worldwide
obesity has more than doubled. So, I would like to ask my group mates a question.
What factors cause obesity and what are the reasons of overweight in modern
society?
Nowadays obesity is a global health problem. There are so many people who suffer from it. To my mind, the reason for this problem is founded in the changing lifestyle of people as well as their habit of eating. Modern people have an extreme lack of physical activities. They use cars instead of walking. Besides, a lot of people don’t want to do physical exercises, they say that they have no time for it. But as we all know ‘movement is life’. One more reason is bad eating habits. When we eat, what we eat and how we eat affects our weight a lot. A lot of people have no time for having normal meals at work, so they try to compensate this with overeating in the evening. And of course, a great problem of our modern world is fast food and poor quality products. To my mind, all these reasons lead to overweight and obesity in modern world.
ОтветитьУдалитьThere many reasons of overweight in modern society. Tanya has already said that the main reasons of it are fast food and lifestyle. I completely agree with her, but I want to add that some people gain weight because of the health problems. For example, women gain weight after giving birth to a chid, some people gain weight after having operations, and somebody has slow metabolism because of different sicknesses. So, lifestyle and habits of eating are onle the part of reasons which cause obesity in modern world.
ОтветитьУдалитьI agree with Tanya and Tonya . I think, there is only one reason of fat increase. It is a predominance of energetic income in comparison with its spending. The overweight is connected with eating habits of the person and his family, an unhealthy food, more often with overeating or consumption of large amounts of fat. The other reason is genetic. Any person who has at least one parent suffering from overweight has tendency to eat. Every day of life for people with overweight is a real challenge, wich must be overcome.

Girls have already mentioned some factors cause obesity. But I would like to say that this problem is closely connected with my family. That`s why it is really interesting for me to read the girls` commentaries to indicate the reasons of obesity and to understand how we can solve this problem. My little sister is rather plump. Of course my parents and I worry about it very much as it can become the great problem for her in the nearest future. The main reason of her overweight, to my mind, is her tendancy to eat while watching TV. She does not pay attention to what she is eating and how much she is eating. In my point of view, lots of people in the modern world are suffering from it. Of course we are trying to solve this problem now. My little sister and I go to the swimmimg pool twice a week and do lots of exercises every day. She starts loosing her weight but it is not so easy as we could imagine. To sum up, I really hope that she will loose weight and become much healthier.

ОтветитьУдалитьI think Viktoria touches on an important question, because obesity is a global problem in modern world. Though a modern lifestyle becomes faster and faster, a lot of people suffer from overweight. To my mind, the main reason is our eating habits. We become addicted to fast-food, from what we don't get useful vitamins and minerals, but only fat. Besides, nowadays people work all day and don't have enough time for physical activity, after work they come home and spend the whole evening resting on the sofa and surfing the Internet or watching TV. Moreover, the polluted environment influences on human's body and causes the obesity. I suppose these three are the main reasons of overweight in modern society.
